National optimal care pathways have been developed to guide recommended care at each stage of the cancer pathway.
Tests for prostate cancer
Initial tests should be arranged by the general practitioner (GP) and may include:
- a prostate specific antigen (PSA) level
- measurement of free-to-total PSA ratio (blood tests).
Timeframes for referral
- Initial tests should be performed within one week of general practitioner (GP) presentation.
- The specialist consultation should take place within six to 12 weeks of the initial GP appointment if they present with no symptoms. Earlier if symptomatic.
- Treatment should commence within three months after diagnosis.
