A person with a suspected melanoma should:
- have their care overseen by a specialist who is a member of a multidisciplinary cancer care team
- attend their first specialist appointment within two weeks of being referred by the general practitioner (GP).

Tests and timeframes
Cancer care pathways have been developed by the Cancer Council to help identify recommended care at each stage of the pathway.
Tests for melanoma
Initial tests may be organised by the general practitioner (GP) and can include:
- a baseline photograph
- measurement of the lesion
- observation over a period of time (for lesions with a low level of suspicion).
- biopsy.
Timeframes for referral
- Initial tests should be performed within two weeks of general practitioner (GP) presentation, with results of a biopsy available within one week.
- The specialist consultation should take place within two weeks of the initial GP appointment.
