Canrefer is an online cancer services directory for residents of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, Australia. It lists multidisciplinary cancer care teams, treatment centres and specialists that provide diagnosis and treatment for people with a suspected or diagnosed cancer.

Canrefer is administered by the Cancer Institute NSW.

Canrefer lists specialists who are members of multidisciplinary teams. A multidisciplinary team (MDT) is a team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals who meet regularly to plan treatment for people with newly diagnosed cancer and to review the treatment plans of existing patients during or after their treatment.

Multidisciplinary teams

Multidisciplinary teams are widely acknowledged as best-practice in clinical cancer care. At multidisciplinary team meetings, team members consider diagnostic and staging information, treatment options and the circumstances and preferences of the person with cancer. They then develop a consensus treatment plan and in collaboration with the person with cancer implement this individualised treatment plan. Cancer specialists can be a member of one or many multidisciplinary teams.

Specialist centres

Canrefer also provides information on specialist centres for people who require complex surgery. There are specialist centres in NSW for the following cancer types:

Patients suspected of having, or diagnosed with, one of these cancer types, should be referred to a specialist who is a member of a multidisciplinary team and practices at one of the specialist centres.

Even if surgery does not seem likely at the time of referral, involvement of a multidisciplinary team early in the cancer journey is recommended to ensure optimal assessment, care, and outcomes.
